To the editor:
I was horrified to read of the severe injuries to the two boys assaulted near Asphalt Green – especially to the boy who suffered the severe skull fracture.
As a senior citizen with mobility issues, Ruth Ohman’s comments in particular really resonated with me. I feel more vulnerable these days knowing that these packs of aggressive marauders are lurking about ready to pounce. (This is not the first such incident in this area.)
I can no longer run in the face of danger the way I used to do… although having to contend with 10 troublemakers at one time would make a fast get-away moot anyway.
For the past year or so, I have made a point of requesting the M20 to drop me off on my corner after 10 p.m. so that I just have one block to travel to my building at the entrance to the Esplanade.
How sad to have to think this way after 17 years in this formerly safe neighborhood. LET’S DO SOMETHING NOW to increase our protection and lessen the threat before an outcome is fatal.
Officers on patrol MUST have the authority to quickly step in, stop attacks, make arrests on the spot – rather than needing to call others to do the job… I call that too little, too late!
