Carl Jung, one of the founding fathers of psychology, once reflected that, “God has fallen out of containment in religion and into human hearts. Our whole unconscious is in an uproar from the God who wants to know and to be known.”
Based on this observation, it is fair to assume that if Jung had not died in 1961, he would be at Trinity Church this Sunday to participate in its new Discovery Adult Education Fall Series, entitled, “After the Fear, the Wonder.” Building on the theme that angst and awe are opposite sides of the same psychological coin, the series will examine whether both (taken together) are the threshold to enlightenment.
Since Jung is unavailable, the kickoff session, “Exploring Fear,” will be hosted by Ann Belford Ulanov, a practicing psychotherapist, a professor of psychiatry and religion at Union Theological Seminary, and the author of more than a dozen books (including, most recently, “Madness & Creativity” and “Knots and Their Untying”). Her presentation will explore the idea of, “Starting Out on the Spiritual Journey,” with a conversation on the role of fear in the spiritual lives of human beings.
The series (which is free and open to the public) will continue for eight consecutive Sundays. For more information, please browse www.trinitywallstreet.org/education/adults, or email christianformation@trinitywallstreet.org, or call 212-300-9902.
