Lecture: Stories of Oracle Bone Inscriptions – a Pivotal Link in Chinese Civilization
China Institute
Discovered 120 years ago by Wang Yirong, Chancellor of the Qing Imperial Academy in Beijing in 1899, Jiǎgǔwén (oracle bone inscriptions, OBI) refers to scripts engraved on animal bones and turtle shells, mostly for divination and events dating back to 1600 BC.
Hundreds of thousands of oracle bones were unearthed during the last century.
Dr. Chen’s lecture will discuss: discovery of OBI, past and current study of OBI, how OBI is used to date the origin of the Chinese writing and the illustration of the vivid Shang royal life through a number of famous OBI pieces. FREE 40 Rector Street.

Many ships pass Lower Manhattan on their way to and from the Midtown Passenger Ship Terminal. Others may be seen on their way to or from piers in Brooklyn and Bayonne. Stated times, when appropriate, are for passing the Colgate clock in Jersey City, New Jersey, and are based on sighting histories, published schedules and intuition. They are also subject to tides, fog, winds, freak waves, hurricanes and the whims of upper management.
