The Art on Paper fair, an exhibition featuring work by artists who look to paper as a major influence in their sculpture, drawing, painting, and photography, kicks off tomorrow (Thursday, March 5) at Pier 36, located on the East River waterfront, between Montgomery and Clinton Streets. The fair runs through Monday (March 8) and will features works by more than 100 artists, represented by 75 galleries.
Among the visually stunning works on display are Wayne White’s larger-than-life sculptures constructed from hand-cut cardboard, such as “FOE,” a hauntingly faceless 15-foot tall gunslinging Confederate soldier. Another is the colossal suspended paper cloudscape, “Maelstrom,” from Mia Pearlman, who is inspired by the ways in which beauty and chaos converge in nature. This piece had its accidental genesis when cut paper taped to the wall of her Brooklyn workspace became partially detached overnight. “One day I walked into the studio and found them hanging into the space of the room,” she recalls. “I instantly knew something interesting had happened.” Other gargantuan pieces will be on display by artists such as William Beckman, Michael Scoggins, and Dave Eggers, who is best known for writing, “A Heart Breaking Work of Staggering Genius”.
Art on Paper is being presented by Art Market Productions, in partnership with the Brooklyn Museum, and the Wall Street Journal. The show was originally slated to take place in a temporary shelter on Pier 26 in Tribeca, but the unusually harsh winter forced a change of venue to the indoor space of Pier 36.
Art on Paper will be open from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm on Friday and Saturday, and from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm on Sunday. Tickets are priced at $25 for a one-day pass, $50 for a pass to all public hours, and $150 for admission to all public hours, plus the opening night (Thursday) party, which runs from 8:00 to 10:30 pm. (Funds raised from this event will benefit the Brooklyn Museum.) The entrance to the exhibit is located on Pier 36 at 299 South Street, near Montgomery Street.
