In May 1927, after 15 million Model Ts were produced, Henry Ford closed his factories and began to retool for a new Model that would be known as the "Baby Lincoln." (The Model T was nicknamed the "Tin Lizzie".) Among the Model A's improvements were brakes to all 4 wheels, a 4 cylinder motor producing 40 horsepower and a three speed gear box allowing for a cruising speed of 40-45 MPH and top speed of about 65 MPH.
It featured hydraulic shock absorbers and a gas tank that fed the carburetor by gravity, eliminating the need for a fuel pump. And with the gas tank behind the instrument panel, it was possible to check the fuel level by peering through a small port-hole.
