Double-crested Cormorant

Posted on May 17, 2016

The double-crested Cormorant is often seen fishing off the esplanade of Battery Park City.  If you see one in the water, keep an eye on it, as in a short amount of time, it’ll dive underneath the water in search of food.  Count to ten and look around and you will see it resurface, sometimes with a fish in its beak.
Cormorants usually breed at around age three. They nest in colonies and the male displays to the female by splashing its wings, swimming in zigzags, diving and bringing up pieces of weeds. And as if this wasn’t enough, at the nest site, the male continues to display by crouching and vibrating wings while calling. The nest is built mostly by the female, with materials brought by male, a platform of sticks with other debris, lined with finer materials.
