In Battery Park City, the opening of our park lawns each spring ranks among the year’s highlights. After a season of repair and regrowth, lawns across our 92 acres – from Rockefeller Park in the north to Wagner Park in the south, and all points between – are reborn for recreation and relaxation during the warm months to come.
This year, the fencing came down on April 15 and 16, and our lawns are now open until their regular mid-November closure.
As our lawns open, BPCA takes the opportunity to remind our parks users about the following pet-friendly and pet-free zones: * Leashed pets are permitted on hard surfaces throughout Battery Park City, except those designated as public art. (Public art in Battery Park City includes the Irish Hunger Memorial and South Cove.)
Hard surfaces newly-opened to pets include Wagner Park’s paths, Teardrop Park’s paths, and the Terrace at the BPC Ball Fields.
* Unleashed pets are permitted only at Battery Park City’s three dog runs – at the North End Avenue Island; “Sirius” at Kowsky Plaza; and at the south end of West Thames Park.
* Pets are not permitted in or on any green space – including plantings, planter beds, tree pits, lawns, or lawn-like surfaces, i.e., turf at the BPC Ball Fields and West Thames Park.
These pet-free and pet-friendly zones will be designated with new signage as part of BPCA’s Wayfinding Signage project. Signs will begin appearing throughout Battery Park City late this year.
As we all work to keep Battery Park City beautiful and enjoyable for all, BPCA asks that owners clean up after their pets. Special Patrol Officers may issue summonses to the very few who choose not to.
