Community Center Offers Free Memberships to Downtown Seniors
The Asphalt Green community center (located at 212 North End Avenue) is offering up to 200 free memberships to seniors who live in Battery Park City. At the October 4 meeting of the Battery Park City Committee of Community Board 1, Karen Borsari, Asphalt Green’s senior director of external engagement, said, “we are inviting Battery Park City residents, aged 65 and up, to apply now through the end of the year.”
She added that while the free memberships will be limited to using the facility between 8am and 3pm, seniors will have full use of the pool, fitness center, and other amenities. “In addition to the regular slate of exercise classes,” she said, “we also just launched ten new senior-exclusive classes.”
An equivalent daytime membership would ordinarily cost $105 per month, plus a $99 initiation fee. “We are offering this opportunity only to Battery Park City seniors now through November 27,” Ms. Borsari said. “After that we will open to all seniors living in Community Board 1, through the end of the year.”
“When we offered free senior memberships in the past,” she noted, “it was based on a lottery. This year, it’s on a first-come, first-served basis. So, if you fill out the application and complete the paperwork, you are in.”
Facilities at the 52,000-square-foot North End Avenue campus include a 25-yard pool drenched in natural light, basketball courts, and a fully equipped fitness center.
