Two nautical marvels entered New York Harbor recently: the HMS Queen Elizabeth, a 65,000-ton aircraft carrier, and the Draken Harald Hårfagre, a 115-foot Viking longship.

Both are state-of-the-art vessels for their respective eras: The aircraft carrier (launched in 2014) is home to 50 flying machines.
The longboat (launched in 2012, but a replica of boats from the 11th century) is propelled by 50 oars. Both vessels are a study in power through military might.

History tells us the legacy boat was built to wage wars of conquest, but the newer ship has a different mission: maintaining the peace, rather than breaching it. And if learning that lesson has taken mankind nearly 1,000 years, that’s still progress of a sort.
