It was a trek to get there. And the weather was not cooperating. We were headed to The Event, Church Street School for Music and Art’s 25th anniversary fundraiser at the Tribeca Rooftop event space and didn’t want to be late. But the afternoon snow had turned to freezing rain and cabs were scarce.
We finally got there, though, and as soon as we stepped in to The Event, the cold, outside world slipped away. We found our way to the party filled with music with Dr. Lisa Ecklund-Flores, founder and executive director Dr. Lisa Ecklund-Flores and her stars, all young people doing what they love to do. Playing music. And supportive parents who understand the importance of the arts for young people.
There was a jazz band of adolescents whose drummer looked pretty damn young, but sounds like Buddy Rich. The band was extremely strong and a pleasure to hear. There were hundreds of downtowners, many of whom send (or sent) their children to Church Street School.
A silent auction offered everything under the sun, all locally produced. Items included funky ties, cool eyeglass frames, original photo of George Harrison, fine leather bags and tickets to Broadway plays.
City Councilmember Margaret Chin was on hand, recognized for her efforts to support Downtown’s longtime music school. In turn, she presented Lisa Ecklund Flores with a New York City Council proclamation honoring the school’s 25 years.
Michael Dorf, founder of the Knitting Factory and CEO of City Winery was lauded for his efforts to help young people connect to music and the arts.
While the stars of the evening were the performing young artists, neighborhood dad and actor Harvey Keitel and his partner Daphna Kastner thanked everyone for their support. Mr. Keitel recalled growing up in Brooklyn and being made to take music lessons. Now he sends his kids to Church Street School and is grateful for the school’s guidance.
The performances of the night began with a beautiful operatic piece by former Church Street School teacher Anya Fidelia. Ms. Fidelia was followed by student Megan Doyle performing her own song at the piano and school alumnus Kyle Aaron, who played some original jazz on the piano.
The evening’s special performance by KT Tunstall got the crowd up to boogie. Funds raised benefit Church Street School’s programs and all the little kiddies who were home sleeping as their parents danced the night away.
