A long time ago, in the extremely cold winter of 1976, I had the opportunity to go birding in the Delaware River Valley in and around Dingman’s Ferry, Pennsylvania.
Jack Padalino, president emeritus of PEEC (Pocono Environmental Education Center) and the Brandwein Institute, a partner with the National Park Service, led the search.

There were a handful of us and I was new to birdwatching. Living for a year in the Pennsylvania woods afforded me the opportunity to see some amazing things in nature, but none compared to the sighting of two Bald Eagles and two Golden Eagles flying low over our heads, no doubt as curious about us as we were of them. Their wingspan was about six feet!
I was hooked.
On Sunday, March 4, Mr. Padalino will lead another birding adventure in the search for eagles.
The morning begins at 8am when the group meets in the parking lot of PEEC. Or you can meet them at the Historic Callahan House, 101 Route 209 South @ mile marker 21, Milford, Pennsylvania. It’s about a 1.5-2 hour trip from Lower Manhattan, but worth the trip.
Dress warmly, bring binoculars, a field guide, and a lunch.
