Here’s a cheaper way to get from Lower Manhattan to Newark Airport using mass transit.
* Take the PATH from WTC to Newark Penn Station. 15 minutes between PATH trains, 25 minutes travel.
* Then take Bus #62 from Newark Penn Station bus depot directly to EWR. 15 minutes between buses, 18 minutes to Terminal A. Total max travel time (barring delays) = 1 hour 15 minutes. Note this is for weekday daytime hours; PATH and Bus are less frequent nights/weekends. Check the schedules beforehand!
* Cost is $2.75 PATH + $2.00 bus ($1 seniors), total $4.75.
Sure, a PATH extension would be great and obviously much more convenient. But in the meantime, this is a better alternative to the NJ Transit train.

Why should capital funds be spent, (plus the needed annual maintenance expenses) on a new rail line to Newark airport when a much cheaper alternative would be easier to implement?
Why not provide a NJ Transit subsidy to run night trains to Newark with a stop at Newark airport (provided that the airport in fact had night flights)?
Accessibility from Lower Manhattan to NJ Transit is easily done out of downtown through Path or MTA to NY Penn Station. Commute time for either connection is much under 45 minutes. If more frequent service would be needed provide an additional subsidy for those two services as well.
If better luggage friendly transports are required, for additional charge, run special trains.
And isn’t’ it just great that the Authority has extra cash laying around to use on this?

Our nation seems divided into warring factions where everyone is encouraged to take a side and dig in when the optimal answer is often taking best of both sides. Your recent article on the proposed PATH train service to Newark Airport is a perfect example.
In your article you say that travelers much choose between taking a cab, an expensive option often taking an hour or more, or taking mass transit, which may take upwards of two hours.
Until the day comes when we are served by a single seat train ride I suggest travelers combine the best of taxis and mass transit by taking the PATH train to Newark’s Penn Station and then hopping a cab to the airport. Total travel time from the World Trade Center is a fairly reliable 45 minutes and the cost is around $20.
Safe travels,
