Paramedics Judge Injuries to Be Non-Life Threatening
A second-grade student at P.S. 150 was struck and injured by a moving car on Rector Place at approximately 3:45pm on Monday afternoon. The child, whose first name is Jack (but whose last name is being withheld) was hit with enough force to leave a visible dent in the side of a white Nissan four-door sedan that was driving toward the front door of the Liberty Court residential building.
Multiple witnesses said that the child, apparently playing with friends, ran out of Rector Lawn Park as the car, driven a Gateway Plaza resident who gave his name only as David, was moving eastbound. The driver said, “I slammed on the brakes as soon as I saw him, but it was too late to stop before the car came in contact with him.”
Several bystanders said that Jack staggered backward to the curb, laid on the sidewalk, and began bleeding profusely from a laceration that extended from the right side of his face almost to the crown of his skull. Within seconds, he was surrounded by a group of parents that included his mother.
According to the FDNY paramedics at the scene, preliminary indications were that the child’s injuries were non-life threatening. Jack, who appeared to be dazed but in good spirits, was placed in a neck brace before being strapped onto a stretcher and taken by ambulance, accompanied by his mother, to NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital.
No further details about the child’s condition were available on Monday evening.
