To the editor:
It (“City Council Hears Testimony On Water Street Arcade Proposal” May 5BroadsheetDAILY) sounds like nothing has stopped the land barons from converting their arcades except a charitable handout or a $$,$$$,$$$ present from the city.
Massive increase in residency and overwhelming foot traffic from tourists seem not to be enough incentive for their own capital investment without pillaging the city coffers.
They want free land from the city, tax breaks and more. They do not need that to expand but our elected officials like to give things away to the rich and powerful that really is not theirs to give away.
For once can a developer just develop without pick-pocketing the public?
After all when they bring in “new tenants” there will no mom and pop stores nor rental discounts.
In the end we the people will pay double and triple.
Do not give land- do not give tax breaks-let them find a way to utilize their land with their money.
At the end of the day they will be turning a substantial profit without raping the public.
It is time to just say NO and see where it goes from here.
